Accessories

Included with the RS 3 Pyraminxes are the standard MoYu puzzle accessories, including a screwdriver, dual-adjustment tool and spare dual-adjustment piece.

Adjustment

To access the dual-adjustment system, turn the Pyraminx's tip (corner) 45°, and pull on the tip carefully. The whole tip will come off and reveal the dual adjustment system.

To adjust the screw depth, use the screwdriver and rotate counter-clockwise or clockwise to make the adjustment. To adjust the spring strength or magnet distance in the MagLev variant, use the blue dual adjustment tool and rotate counter-clockwise. When adjusting, use one hand to hold the piece that houses the magnets, as if the piece turns adjusting will not be possible.

Turning feel and Performance

In the video review, Cameron said

The tips [of both variants] feel identical to me.

Turning is super quiet and dry sound, it has kind of a hollow sound... the MagLev version is a lot easier to turn than the standard version [out of the box].

As for performance, Cameron said

Unsurpisingly, the corner cutting is a little better on the standard than the MagLev.

However, this likely could be the out-of-the-box settings, where with some fine-tuning, the corner-cutting could be improved.

Lubricant Recommendation

Out of the box, the turning is quiet and dry sounding. To add some more substance and remove the dry feel, we recommend lubricant such as martian to smoothen out the puzzle.

To slow down the fast-turning MagLev variant, Cosmos can slow down the puzzle without changing the turning feel. However, if both removing the dry feel and sound alongside slowing down the puzzle is desired, a thicker lubricant such as Nebula or Galaxy will achieve said effect.

Conclusion

Overall, we are excited to see MoYu continue to create more puzzles that include MagLev at lower prices, lowering the barrier to entry for flagship-quality puzzles for more cubers. It will be interesting to see whether or not this puzzles is picked up by fast pyraminx solvers, especially considering the price of the flagship MoYu WeiLong pyraminx, which also features MagLev for $6 more.

Versions

Right off the bat, the MoreTry are offering their new flagship 3x3 in four different variants, being standard, enhanced, "half magnetic" and "full MagLev". At time of writing, MoreTry are yet to release any English material detailing the exact differences and the features that the variants have.

For the sake of simplicity in this post, we'll be skipping over the standard version.

Packaging

The packaging for full MagLev is rather extravagant, including a pamphlet, screwdriver to adjust tensions, a 3x3 tutorial guide and anti-fog lens wipes of all things.

The boxes smell the most like an apple product out of any other cube. Carlos and I are both Apple connoisseurs, him a little bit more than me, but this definetely has the most Apple-esque smell

The enhanced version includes the same accessories as the MagLev, but with a more standard box style than the symmetrical opening that the MagLev box features.

Mechanism & Turning

Between the versions, there are not many differences between the puzzle visually asides from the color of the adjustment tool system underneath the center cap, where the full maglev version is green and the enhanced is purple.

At base settings, the MagLev cube is ridiculously fast, doing full 360 degree U turns despite not being lubricated. The turning is pretty buttery and the corner cutting is solid, although on stock settings slightly past 45 degree you hit a "brick wall" where it refuses to corner cut. 

The magnet strength of the puzzles sent to us are very strong, with magnets uniquely placed on the corner feet on the enhanced version - omitted on the standard version.

...everyone is just sort of going to like a wallpaper website or like a fabric store and looking at random designs and just picking which one I think looks cool and throwing it onto a cube piece.

This one reminds more of like a snake skin pattern... but it feels really good

Packaging

MoYu has stuck with their "lite" packaging that came available with the WR M 2021 (non-maglev), meaning that there is overall less material used to package the cube and accessories. MoYu has discontinued their fancier packaging in favor of their lighter packaging, making it less expensive which passes on the savings to you.

The box itself features purple text on most faces, which hints at the internals of the WR M 2021 MagLev, and has a picture of the internals of the cube prominently on the top.

Included in the box is the cube itself, a screwdriver, spring compression tools, magnet adjustment tools, core tensioning tools and MoYu's display box.

• Weight: ~5g heavier than the WR M 2021 (Total 85g)
• Side: 55mm (same as standard WR M 2021)

The biggest visual difference of the puzzle is the purple internals, which is quite eye-catching, especially in comparison to the original WR M 2021.

MagLev and Compression System

The MagLev system replaces the traditional springs found speed cubes, where two opposing magnets are placed in the core to emulate a spring. This allows for faster rotation from less friction that would have been present in the usual springs.

MoYu's dual adjustment system, which has been used in MoYu and subbrand MoFang JaoShi puzzles for the past couple years, has 9 settings that would compress the springs, resulting in a change in elasticity.

However, in the WR M 2021 MagLev, this system is more a change in distance between the magnets. By using the compression tool, the bottom magnet will move closer or further away from the upper magnet, which has a direct result in a change in the turning speed of the cube. At the lowest setting, the cube is extremely fast, but at higher dual adjustment tensions the puzzle is noticeably slower.

We'd certainly recommend this puzzle for cubers that are fans of extremely fast-turning puzzles, although this cube can certainly be slowed down with a thicker or slower lube such as Nebula or Galaxy.

Speed and Performance

It's funny because I thought the WR M 2021 was pretty quick compared to other cubes that were at least around the same time, and now that I'm feeling the MagLev version this thing feels slow - which is somethign I did not think I'd say. 

I do realize [the maglev] is not a new technology by any means, it just seems like the cube companies might have kind of hit a... a wall and they're kind of looking for things to come out with...so they clung onto MagLev and now it's sort of a race between GAN and MoYu.

The cube itself uses the same piece design as the original WR M 2021, so its overall performance is very good, corner-cutting liberally when on reasonable tensions and not popping and/or corner twisting.
