Turning feel and Performance

In the video review, Cameron said

The tips [of both variants] feel identical to me.

Turning is super quiet and dry sound, it has kind of a hollow sound... the MagLev version is a lot easier to turn than the standard version [out of the box].

As for performance, Cameron said

Unsurpisingly, the corner cutting is a little better on the standard than the MagLev.

However, this likely could be the out-of-the-box settings, where with some fine-tuning, the corner-cutting could be improved.

Lubricant Recommendation

Out of the box, the turning is quiet and dry sounding. To add some more substance and remove the dry feel, we recommend lubricant such as martian to smoothen out the puzzle.

[dib_prod_9196218514]

To slow down the fast-turning MagLev variant, Cosmos can slow down the puzzle without changing the turning feel. However, if both removing the dry feel and sound alongside slowing down the puzzle is desired, a thicker lubricant such as Nebula or Galaxy will achieve said effect.

Conclusion

Overall, we are excited to see MoYu continue to create more puzzles that include MagLev at lower prices, lowering the barrier to entry for flagship-quality puzzles for more cubers. It will be interesting to see whether or not this puzzles is picked up by fast pyraminx solvers, especially considering the price of the flagship MoYu WeiLong pyraminx, which also features MagLev for $6 more.

Whether it be the new cognitive challenge of solving the puzzle, development of fine motor skills, new social skills and As a parent or guardian, cubing, the solving of twisty puzzles, can be a great hobby and pastime for a multitude of reasons. Whether it be the new cognitive challenge of solving the puzzle, development of fine motor skills, new social skills and developmental experiences through cubing competitions, or just to get your child off their smartphone or computer, cubing and speed cubing has numerous benefits. However, you may be wondering what type of puzzle to purchase for your child? Here we go over the main criteria you should consider when purchasing new speed cubes for kids.

Types of Puzzles

You may be familiar with the traditional 3x3 Rubik's cube, which is a three-layered cubic twisty puzzle as suggested by its name. This is a cornerstone of cubing, with almost every cuber owning at least one, as it used to teach fundamental cubing skills such as notation and basic solving techniques.

However after acquiring the 3x3, there is a far wider range of twisty puzzle options available. More cubic puzzles that vary in layer amount are readily available for purchase, ranging from the two-layered 2x2 through to 7x7 and beyond. The higher-order puzzles build upon skills learned through solving the 3x3 and add an additional challenge to solving thanks to their additional pieces and layers.

Other non-cubic puzzles also provide a great challenge, being present in World Cube Association or WCA competitions as more events that your child may chose to compete in further into their cubing journey. Puzzles such as Megaminx, a dodecahedral twisty puzzle and Skewb solve slightly differently to their NxN counterparts and create different solving experiences in comparison to their NxN counterparts.

Criteria

Budget is also an important consideration for many families and parents when it comes to purchasing new items and puzzles for children. 3x3s range from anywhere from $3 EUR for the most basic of models to the $65 for the highest-end flagships from renowned manufacturers. We recommend selecting puzzles on a couple criteria, provided your child does not have any specific preferences or requirements

  • Budget
    • Some of the lower end puzzles are less enjoyable to turn due to their lower levels of performance and higher amount of friction between the pieces when turning, although there are certainly some exceptions to this. See below some of our recommendations for a number of different price ranges, from under $10 EUR to upwards of $60 EUR.
    • To filter by price on our website, simply head over to the collection you would like to filter, for example the 3x3 collections, and sort by "Price - Low to High" or "Price - High to Low"
  • Magnets
    • In 2021, lots of puzzles are readily available in magnetic variants, which "snap" the puzzle into cubic shape at the end of each turn. Magnets are highly recommended since it greatly increases the enjoyability of turning the puzzle, along with helping you or your child align the layers quicker. Magnetic 3x3s are readily available for all price brackets - see speed cubes for kids recommendations listed below
Read more about magnetic speed cubes here
  • Plastic Color
    • Puzzles come in a couple common color variants, stickered and stickerless black/white. Stickers are what you will find on the original releases of the Rubik's variant and give the cube its classic look, the downside being that with heavy usage the stickers tend to chip and peel. Stickered cubes also allow you to customize the "shades" of the 6 sides of the puzzle, especially useful for cubers and children with specific vision requirements or color blindness. The other common option is stickerless, where the plastic of the cube itself is colored, which prevents the sticker peeling and chipping issue, however looks quite different from its stickered counterpart.

We recommend stickerless cubes for children mostly as they are quite durable, but if your child has specific vision requirements stickered puzzles are great as you can choose the most contrasting colors. We offer an extensive range of stickers for most popular puzzles - browse our sticker range here.
  • Performance
    •  The latest puzzles allow the cuber to "cut corners" when turning, meaning that the user does not have to fully align a layer when turning the puzzle in order to make the next turn. Whilst the performance does not necessarily correlate to the price of a puzzle, stepping up to puzzles from more renowned manufacturers such as MoYuQiYi and GAN will provide the best performance and enjoyability when turning - that your child will thank you for!
  • Version
    • If you have a little extra room in your budget, consider upgrading to one of our Premium versions. Our premium puzzles boast extensive lubrication and tensioning, bringing out the fullest performance in whichever puzzle you decide to purchase for your child or even yourself. To learn more read our article on our premium options

The main adjustment system present in modern flagships is the spring adjustment system, a great tool for customizing your cube. Here we explain what the spring adjustment systems do, and the different forms of the spring adjustment system that are available on the market.

What do Springs in Cubes Do?

Most, but not all, modern cubes include springs in each of the center pieces underneath the screws, totaling in at 6 screws per face for standard NxN puzzles. When the center piece moves upwards, the spring places a force downwards onto the center piece, allowing the cube to stay in shape. Without springs, cubes become a floppy unenjoyable mess. However, these springs can have other effects on turning, as in recent times spring swaps and now integrated spring adjustment systems are highly prevalent in the 3x3 speed cube hardware scene in particular.

What is Spring Tension?

As long as not stretched or compressed beyond their elastic limit, most springs obey Hooke's law, which states that the force with which the spring pushes back is linearly proportional to the distance from its equilibrium length:

F=-kx

x is the displacement vector – the distance and direction the spring is deformed from its equilibrium length.

F is the resulting force vector – the magnitude and direction of the restoring force the spring exerts

k is the rate, spring constant or force constant of the spring, a constant that depends on the spring's material and construction. The negative sign indicates that the force the spring exerts is in the opposite direction from its displacement

Source: https://tuyendungnamdinh.com/wiki/Spring_(device)

So what does this mean? The higher the force exerted from the spring, making a puzzle more stable. Different springs have different values of k, changing the force output and in turn changing the stability and speed of a puzzle. Similarly, by increasing the x, the displacement factor, the force increases as well.

Different puzzles have different adjustment systems, which all change the forces that the springs exert, resulting in a more flexible or more stable turning experience.

What difference does this have to tensioning the screwhead in a regular cube?

When tightening the screwhead in a regular cube, it reduces the distance factor of the spring, making the force the spring exerts larger. However, this also reduces the full distance that the center piece can move upwards, resulting in worsened corner cutting in some cases. By having seperate systems, it alows for both parameters to be adjuusted individually.

MoYu

MoYu debuted its first iteration of a spring adjustment system, which they named their dual adjustment system, as a purchasable extra for the WeiLong GTS (version 1). The distance of the spring is changed in the system, modifying x, the displacement vector resulting in a change force, and change in stability, when the tension is changed.

Source: MoYu-Cube Facebook

This system only made a return in a more robust, integrated form in the third GTS puzzle, the WeiLong GTS 3M, where again the distance can be adjusted in order for a change in stability and speed versus corner cutting and overall performance from screwhead distance.

MoYu have continued to use this mechanism in their following flagships, and budget cubes, in the WeiLong WR line in the 2019, 2020 and 2021 models, although a shift to MagLev technology instead of springs may be occurring in the near future with the WeiLong WR M MagLev.

GAN

GAN was a leader in the advancement of adjustable spring tensions, with the 356 Air the first of its kind have a robust interchangeable spring system, named "GES" (Gan Elasticity System) where each nut contained a spring that had a strength spring, changing constant k in hookes law. This became even more popular with cubes such as the Gan 356 Air Master, UM and SM, which came with multiple sets of springs that change the tension of the cubes. These required a specific tool to rotate the GES nuts.

The latest GAN puzzle to feature the interchangeable GES nut system was the 356 X, which was incredibly popular and also featured an adjustable magnet system.

GAN 356 X

GAN has traditioned to a dual adjustment system similar to that of MoYu's, where the spring distance and the height of the GES nut, which acts a screwhead, are adjusted individually. This was first featured in the GAN 356 XS, and carried over to the 356 X V2 and the GAN 11 M series.

GAN 356 X V2

However, in their own Pyraminx, Skewb and Megaminx, GAN have also included their interchangeable GES nut system for similar spring adjustment options that are present in their 3x3s.

QiYi

QiYi were slightly late adopters spring tension hardware craze, with only their subbrand X-Man producing a flagship puzzle that has some form of spring tension adjustment through their own dual adjustment system.

[dib_prod_6580646510705]

MS-Cube

A newer manufacturer to the speed cube scene, MS-Cube also has their own form of dual adjustment system in their flagship MS3L and MS3L Enhanced magnetic puzzles, with 3 spring compression options.

[dib_prod_6626850635889] [dib_prod_6626860564593]

DaYan

DaYan also has its own form of dual adjustment spring compression system in their Dayan Tengyun V2 M, the successor to the widely popular Tengyun V1. However, this puzzle did not gain as much popularity as the first version. DaYan also released a revival to their older Zhanchi line, the Zhanchi Pro M which uses the same spring adjustment mechanism as the Tengyun V2 M.
