High-Viscosity Lubricant

If you child has a current "main speed cube" that they enjoy solving, some thicker, "high-viscosity" lubricant can help to dampen the sound from the speed cube. High-viscosity lubricant, meaning a lubricant with higher resistance to movement, can dampen sound when applied to the internals of a speed cube.

Speed cube pops are described as when you are turning a cube and a piece or pieces, "pop" out.

Many new cubers panic when their cube pops and immediately assume that it is damaged or defective when in reality, it is extremely rare for a piece to break during normal use.

Fixing & Avoiding "Pops"

Causes

• Tensions are set too loose and/or unevenly
• Lack of lubrication
• Rough, inaccurate turning
• Low-quality puzzles are more prone to popping

Solutions

• Set your tensions as tight and evenly as possible while still allowing for reasonable corner-cutting.
  • Note: Reasonable corner-cutting on a 3x3 would be about 45 degrees. Big cubes (4x4+) typically are expected to corner-cut about 1 piece when tensioned properly.

• Properly lubricate your cube and keep it lubricated with a proper speed cube lubricant.
• Slow down your turning and work on being smooth and accurate. The less you rely on your cube's corner-cutting, the less strain is placed on the mechanism.
• Avoid cheap cubes. Cheap cubes are made of lower-quality plastics which are more prone to breaking. Additionally, the technology that goes into lower-end cubes is far less than a mid-high range cube.

Big cubes (4x4+)

It is important to keep in mind that big cubes such as a 4x4, 5x5, 6x6, or 7x7 have a lot more complex mechanism than a 3x3, for example.

Take extra care when speedsolving a big cube. While modern big cubes, do have improved mechanisms and anti-popping measures, inaccurate turning that causes the mechanism too much strain or flex will likely result in a "pop".

Are you sure my cube isn't broken?

More than likely, it isn't broken. Again, it is very rare that we see modern speed cubes break during normal use. 99% of the time, we see cubes break when they are dropped.

The easiest way to identify a broken piece is to look for stress marks or signs of breakage.

Rubik's cube competitions are a great way to meet new friends, challenge yourself and set new personal bests in a fun environment. We go over where to look for local cubing competitions in your area, how to prepare for them, and other speed cube competition basics.

What is the World Cube Association?

The World Cube Association or WCA is a worldwide organization that "governs competitions for mechanical puzzles that are operated by twisting groups of pieces, commonly known as 'twisty puzzles'." The WCA is the go-to for all speedcubing competitions, with official competitions being organized all around the globe.

What is an official speed cube competition?

Speedcubing competitions consist of many events, most of which have the aim to solve a type of twisty puzzle, such as the 3x3 Rubik's cube, as quickly as possible in a competitive environment (excluding Fewest Moves Challenge or FMC - but we'll get to that later). This usually happens in "rounds", where entrants compete to solve a twisty puzzle as quickly as possible, with a top percentage moving onto the next round.

Most rounds of an event consist of 5 solves, giving the competitor a "truncated average", where the best and worst disregarded (but recorded), and the middle three times are "averaged" through a mean to give the competitor their average time.

The World Cube Association, at the timer of writing, recognize a total of 17 "events"

Any combination of events may be present at a WCA competition, the most common being 3x3, 2x2, 4x4, and other non NxN events such as Pyraminx and Skewb - although some competitions in the past may have larger amounts of more obscure events such as FMC and 4x4/5x5 Blindfolded.

Official world records for the above events are set in these competitions and at these competitions only - for example, to get the 3x3 average world record, you would have to attend a competition, and in a 3x3 round beat the current 5.53 average set by Feliks Zemdegs.

A list of upcoming competitions can be found here, on the WCA competition page. They list the date and location, but you are also able to filter by event types for your favorite events. Also, you can filter by geographical location.
